God's Attributes: The Knowledge of God

The first thing that comes to mind when we think about the knowledge of God is that God is omniscient. He knows all things. This includes everything and everyone from the past, present and future. But, His omniscience goes much further than just knowing factual things. Psalm 139:6 says, "Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high, I cannot attain unto it." Nothing can be hidden from Him and nothing escapes His notice. This knowledge doesn't only include everything that we do "in secret", it even includes the things that are not seen; our thoughts and what we harbor in our hearts. All these are known by God. He is perfectly familiar with every detail in the life of every person and being. Psalm 139:2-4 explains this. "You know when I sit down and when I stand up; you understand my thoughts from far away. You observe my travels and my rest; you are aware of all my ways. Before a word is on my tongue, you know all about it, LORD.

From the beginning, the trees in the garden could not conceal Adam and Eve. He not only knew what they did, He knew this would happen before He created them. Ephesians 1:4-7 tells us that God chose us in him, before the foundation of the world, to be holy and blameless in love before him. God predestined us to be adopted as sons through Jesus Christ. In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses according to the riches of his grace. If God chose us before the foundation of the world, knowing everything about us, the good and the bad, we must ask ourselves, why? It is humbling to think that every sin that I've committed and every sin that I will commit is already known by God and yet He chose to redeem me. The crazy part is that it was definitely not because of anything I did or deserved. Romans 8:35-39 tells us that nothing can separate us from the love of God. God loves me in the full knowledge of who I am and what I've done.

Scripture reveals His perfect knowledge from cover to cover. Nothing can escape His knowledge. Cain couldn't hide his sin, Sarah couldn't hide the fact that she laughed in her tent, Achan couldn't hide the items he took from Jericho from God. We've observed throughout our lifetime all the trials of alleged crimes committed. Mankind and our judicial system tries its best to bring about justice in these trials. We can't be convinced or satisfied 100% by the outcome of these trials. God, in His infinite and perfect knowlege knows exactly what crimes were committed and by whom. One day every case will be brought to God's righteous judgment.

As believers, we should find great comfort in knowing that God is omniscient...from eternity past to eternal future. We should find great comfort because God has revealed the outcome of everything and every being since the beginning. We know how Satan will be conquered and dealt with for eternity. We know how all the saints will meet Christ in the air when He comes for us.

We should also find great comfort in knowing that God's omniscience is well aware of every prayer we bring before Him. He is intimately familiar with every circumstance and situation we find ourselves in. We don't have to worry if our prayers are being heard. He knows the thoughts and intentions of our heart.

Our minds can't comprehend what it takes for our God to be thoroughly aware of everything that is transpiring with every person and everything in the entire universe from the least to the greatest. A single sparrow on the entire planet will not fall to the ground without God's knowledge. Matthew 10:31 explains how we are much more valuable to God than the sparrow.

Is there application for us regarding the knowledge of God? Because we know all of this to be true as it is written in Scripture, we should be filled with amazement and be in complete awe and adoration! We can't simply state that God is omniscient and move on without considering what it means for God to perfectly know the end from the beginning with such certainty and clarity. How should we respond to a God who knows every detail and even every secret of our heart, yet never gives up on us and continues to love us?

Please spend some time in prayer now with the knowledge of God and His perfect and all-knowing knowledge.
